WordPress maintenance: That thing nobody notices… until it breaks
There are websites that work for years without touching anything.
And cars that drive 200,000 km without ever going to the workshop.
Is it normal? No.
Does it happen? Sometimes.
Is it a good idea to trust it? Absolutely not.
With websites, and especially with WordPress, exactly the same thing happens as with a car: if you don’t do regular maintenance, sooner or later something will fail. And almost always, it fails at the worst possible moment.
WordPress, plugins and PHP: the engine, the parts and the oil
A website built with WordPress (or Prestashop, or any open-source CMS) works thanks to several key components:
-
WordPress itself (the engine)
-
Plugins (the parts that add functionality)
-
The theme (the bodywork, but also part of the chassis)
-
The server’s PHP (the oil that makes everything run smoothly)
All of this is constantly updated. Why? Because:
Not updating is like driving with a red warning light on the dashboard… and covering it with duct tape.

“My website is fine, don’t touch anything”
This sentence is the digital equivalent of:
“the car makes a strange noise, but as long as it starts, it’s fine”.
The problem is that most attacks, hacks or malware infections don’t give any warning. One day you visit your website and:
-
Google marks it as dangerous
-
It starts redirecting to strange websites
-
It sends spam
-
Or it simply stops working
And then, yes: tow truck, workshop and a bigger bill.
Preventive maintenance (yes, the boring one) is the good one
Updating plugins, themes, WordPress and PHP versions is not glamorous.
You don’t see it.
It doesn’t “look nice”.
But it’s what prevents everything we mentioned before:
Just like changing oil, filters and checking the brakes before the car breaks down. Those inspections that, if you go to the official dealer, cost a bit more… you know the ones…
Monthly maintenance or hour packs?
There are two common approaches here:
-
Classic monthly maintenance: fixed fee, no matter what.
-
Hour packs: real work, real time, pay for what is actually done.
At Frucomedia, we clearly prefer the second option. We like the idea of: work done, work paid.
Hour packs allow you to:
-
Prioritise what really matters
-
Use time on real updates, improvements or reviews
-
Not pay for “being there just in case”
And if one month there’s more work, it gets done.
If another month there’s less, that’s perfectly fine too.
No small print. No ghost maintenance plans.
Remember: your website is a work tool. And like any tool:
-
If you take care of it, it lasts longer
-
If you maintain it, it works better
-
If you neglect it… it will eventually break
And that’s it, folks! Web maintenance is not a luxury, it’s digital common sense. And trust me: prevention is always cheaper than fixing things later.
